Stories from Practice · Collection One

Every organisation has stories.

Some become part of the culture.
Others quietly shape it.

The stories within this collection do not begin with frameworks, strategic plans or theories of improvement. They begin with ordinary moments of organisational life.

A leadership meeting that felt unexpectedly difficult. A conversation that continued long after it ended. A decision that quietly revealed something much larger. A parent asking a question no one had previously considered. A teacher wondering why the same challenge kept returning.

These moments rarely appear remarkable when they happen.

Yet they often reveal the organisational conditions shaping improvement far more clearly than strategic documents ever could.

Recognition before explanation.

Stories from Practice is not a collection of case studies or organisational success stories. It is a collection of recurring organisational experiences that educational leaders may recognise within their own contexts.

Some stories emerge from a single experience. Others bring together observations gathered across many years and many organisations. Individual details may be adapted to protect confidentiality, but the organisational truths they illuminate remain authentic.

These stories are not written to provide answers. They are written to help educational leaders recognise questions they may not yet have known how to ask.

Because recognition often becomes the beginning of understanding.

This collection is intentionally unfinished.

New stories will continue to emerge as new organisational observations demand better questions, deeper understanding and different ways of seeing.

Thoughtful inquiry continues

The Collection

Each Story begins somewhere different. A moment of misalignment. An assumption no one realised they were making. A conversation that kept being postponed. A familiar practice that had become difficult to see. A leadership decision whose consequences appeared somewhere far from the room in which it was made.

Beneath each sits a different organisational condition.

Together, the Stories create a growing body of work exploring what becomes visible when we look more closely at the ordinary experiences through which organisational culture, leadership and improvement are lived. They are connected, but they do not need to be read in order.

There is no required sequence.

Begin with the Story that feels most familiar.

From Recognition to Exploration

Stories from Practice and Signature Insights offer different ways into the thinking. A Story may create recognition that leads into a related Signature Insight; an Insight may reveal something that becomes more recognisable when encountered through a Story.

Together, they create different ways of exploring organisational territory: one through lived experience, the other through focused inquiry.
